  7. TEKMAR'S "TICK" UTILITY (QUIKBUF)
  8.  
  9.   This utility can cause the printscreen function of the QUIKBUF program to
  10.   fail (when it is attempted from within the QUIKBUF pop-up menu).  Removing
  11.   TICK removes the problem.
  12.  
  13.   In addition, there is one customer report of TICK causing Lotus 123 to not
  14.   recognize any expanded memory.  Try removing TICK to see if the problem
  15.   goes away.  Symphony may have the same problems, but none have been
  16.   reported so far.

  18. SAS
  19.  
  20.   SAS Version 6.03 uses EMS 4.0.  However, it maps only four pages at a time
  21.   and doesn't use the EEMS portion of EMS 4.0.  Therefore, this version of
  22.   SAS works with any Above Board; you don't need an Above Board Plus.

  24. SIDEKICK
  25. IBM 3270 CONTROL PROGRAM & SIDEKICK
  26.  
  27.   Borland reports problems with SideKick and Version 2.1 of the 3270 control
  28.   program.  They were working on a solution in July of 1986, and we have had
  29.   no recent reports of this problem, so apparently this has been resolved.
  30.   This problem was unrelated to the Above Board.
  31.  
  32. SIDEKICK & QUIKBUF
  33.  
  34.   When both SideKick and QUIKBUF are active, commands executed from QUIKBUF
  35.   will occur after both QUIKBUF and SideKick are popped down.
  36.  
  37. SIDEKICK PLUS
  38.  
  39.   This version of SideKick uses 64K bytes of conventional memory if expanded
  40.   memory is present, 384K bytes if expanded memory isn't present.

  42. SMARTDRV.SYS & THE IBM PS/2 MODEL 30 286
  43.  
  44.   Smartdrv.sys in extended memory (no matter who supplies the extended
  45.   memory) cause lockups in a IBM Model 30 286. Microsoft has admitted a
  46.   problem and has released an update for the disk caching software. Have
  47.   customers contact Microsoft if they have the problem and smartdrv.sys date
  48.   code is less than Sept. 7, 1988.

  50.   Smartdrv.sys seems to work okay with expanded memory.
  51.  
  52. SMARTERM V 1.25 AND QUIKBUF
  53.  
  54.   The Smarterm Version 1.25 terminal emulator locks up if used with the
  55.   Above Board QUIKBUF program.

  57. SQZ! AND 1-2-3
  58.  
  59.   SQZ!, a data squeezer utility for 1-2-3 and Symphony, is compatible with
  60.   Above Board expanded memory.

  62. SUPERCALC 5
  63.  
  64.   SuperCalc uses ALL expanded memory available, though not all memory will
  65.   show up in their status screen (e.g. with 1.4 meg Exp memory SC5 will show
  66.   1.1 meg total, with 1.01 meg available.  The first 300k is 'used' by SC5).
  67.   Several reports of SC5 locking up during loading when EMM is installed.
  68.   Could not be duplicated here in same brand of computer with same version
  69.   of EMM.

  71. SUPERKEY AND QUIKBUF

  73.   When both are installed, the Quikbuf pop-up menu passes a carriage return
  74.   through to the application.

  76. SUPER PROJECT EXPERT
  77.  
  78.   (Field report)  A user reports this program is compatible with Above
  79.   Boards.  There was a problem, however, where the computer rebooted every
  80.   time Super Project was invoked with EMM.SYS active.  Computer Associates,
  81.   the software manufacturer, instructed the user to configure EMM to use the
  82.   address E000 (which, unfortunately, wasn't possible in their 80286-based
  83.   computer).  However, the user added the parameter EXPF=D000 to the EMM
  84.   command line in the CONFIG.SYS file and that allowed Super Project to
  85.   operate correctly.

  87. SYMPHONY & EXPANDED MEMORY
  88.  
  89.   Commands to display the amount of expanded memory:

  91.   The 1-2-3 command:    /Worksheet Status
  92.   The Symphony command: F9 Settings
  93.  
  94.   Lotus 1-2-3 & Symphony use 4 bytes of conventional memory as a pointer to
  95.   every cell that is stored in expanded memory.  This means that ONCE
  96.   CONVENTIONAL MEMORY IS FULL, there will be no more room to store pointers
  97.   so NO MORE EXPANDED MEMORY CAN BE USED.

  99.   Lotus 1-2-3 Ver. 3.0 solves this by using extended memory. (for 286/386's)
  100.   Lotus Version 2.2 & Symphony still have this limitation.

  102.   The following data types are ALWAYS stored in conventional memory:
  103.   Integers, Range names, String constants.
  104.  
  105.   Expanded memory is used to store:
  106.               Real numbers, Labels, Formulas.
  107.  
  108.   You cannot save conventional memory by changing data types.
  109.  
  110.   It is possible to have a large spreadsheet full of numbers that does not
  111.   use ANY expanded memory.  On the other extreme, you can have many complex
  112.   formulas or long labels that will fill all the expanded memory while
  113.   conventional memory is still available.
  114.  
  115.   In order to get more conventional memory, have users remove any TSR
  116.   programs they have loaded.  This will allow them to use more expanded
  117.   memory.

  119. THINKTANK AND EXPANDED MEMORY
  120.  
  121.   ThinkTank Version 2.1 or higher uses LIM expanded memory to handle
  122.   outlines faster.  This isn't documented in the ThinkTank manual, but both
  123.   Living Videotext and Intel have confirmed it.

  125. TOPAZ
  126.  
  127.   Topaz is a 3-D modeling program that uses the AT&T Targa card and requires
  128.   2M bytes of expanded memory (but works best with 8M bytes).  AT&T Graphics
  129.   Software Labs makes this software.

  131. VDISK
  132.  
  133.   VDISK is compatible with Above Boards.  However, when using VDISK, and an
  134.   Above Board PLUS or Plus 8 providing LIM 4.0 expanded memory, don't use
  135.   I/O port 218 for the Above Board.  If you do, VDISK won't install.
  136.   Instead, it will display an, "Extender card switches do not match memory
  137.   size" message.
  138.  
  139.   VDISK uses I/O ports 210 and 213.  An Above Board Plus uses these same
  140.   ports if the board is set to I/O port 218 and it's using the Above Board
  141.   Plus EMM 4.0.
  142.  
  143. VEM.SYS
  144.  
  145.   VEM.SYS is the device driver for the Above Disk program.  If you try to
  146.   use EMM with VEM.SYS, EMM will appear to install, but no expanded memory
  147.   will be recognized (the CHKMEM program will report 0K bytes expanded
  148.   memory).  Remove the VEM.SYS line from the CONFIG.SYS file.

  150. WORD PERFECT
  151.  
  152.   Intel has no reports of incompatibilities between WordPerfect and Above
  153.   Boards.
  154.  
  155. WORD PERFECT 5.0
  156.  
  157.   We have no Field Reports of any incompatibilities.

  159.   Tech Notes:
  160.   We have FIELD REPORTS that it may require EMM 4.0, but this version DOES
  161.   use expanded memory for documents that become too large for conventional
  162.   memory.  About 300k of program menus, error messages, and overlays can
  163.   also be loaded into expanded memory by using the /r parameter.  This will
  164.   increase program speed. Word Perfect 5.0 uses expanded memory for
  165.   documents AUTOMATICALLY unless expanded memory is disabled using the /NE
  166.   parameter.

  168. WORDSTAR & QUIKBUF
  169.  
  170.   When using Wordstar with the Above Board's QUIKBUF program, you need to
  171.   change the defaults in the Wordstar print menu.  Instead of answering "N"
  172.   to, "Do you want to continue and print?", answer, "Y".  This will keep
  173.   QUIKBUF from interfering with Wordstar's internal buffer.
